Before you are discharged, make sure that you have arranged for a follow-up visit. Ask your doctor to provide you with take-home pain medications. Make sure you have a list of all types of ways to contact your surgeon in case of an emergency. Also make sure that your doctor has explained what postoperative discomforts are normal and what to do if they occur, and what is abnormal and may require immediate medical attention. Most importantly, make sure that you feel comfortable enough to go home when you are discharged. If you are not comfortable, discuss this with your surgeon.
