Loss of sensitivity of the skin and surrounding abdominal tissue may be more common in the few days after surgery, but this reverses as healing occurs. Sometimes, especially when the navel may have been overtly flattened or stretched, permanent loss of the sensation at the navel and skin of the lower abdomen can occur.
